Aluminum Pure
Sustainable Aesthetics in its Purest Form

The Patina of Authenticity

Aluminum Pure demonstrates that sustainability and aesthetic excellence are not mutually exclusive. Its virtually untreated surface develops a unique patina through everyday use—a living material that tells its own story. Especially in combination with exposed concrete and natural wood, Aluminum Pure reveals its understated elegance. Sustainability becomes tangible: compared to anodized finishes, we save 37% energy during production.

Material Character with Environmental Benefits

Aluminum offers multiple advantages: a pleasant tactile feel due to optimal thermal behavior, light weight, and near-infinite recyclability without loss of quality. At FSB, we use aluminum with a carbon footprint of just 4 kg CO₂/kg—one quarter of the global average.

The Aluminum Pure finish embodies our sustainability philosophy: by eliminating polishing, blasting, and anodizing, we skip three energy-intensive processing steps. This conserves resources and simplifies end-of-life recycling.

Material Authenticity as a Design Statement

The unaltered naturalness of Aluminum Pure has a matte, almost archaic character that changes depending on the spatial context. The surface interacts with light and evolves through touch—similar to our esteemed bronze hardware, it gains character and depth over time. We currently offer three product families in the Aluminum Pure finish:

  • FSB 1289: clear, contemporary design language

  • FSB 1292: the comprehensive line by Foster + Partners

  • FSB 1267: our homage to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Bauhaus icon

Precision in the Production Process

Our commitment to quality is evident in our perfected gravity die-casting process. At 660°C, molten aluminum is poured into precisely engineered molds using only the force of gravity. After casting and quality control, components are carefully finished by hand. They then undergo vibratory finishing to achieve their final surface quality. For Aluminum Pure, the surface is intentionally left in its raw state—an aesthetic choice that also reduces environmental impact.

Project: Bauhaus-Museum Weimar

At the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar, Aluminum Pure reinterprets the industrial aesthetic of Bauhaus-era workshops. Architect Heike Hanada collaborated with FSB to create a custom version of the FSB 1147 handle, adapted to the proportions of the museum’s doors—a dialogue between historical design principles and contemporary material expression.
